Navigating the City- Women in Public Spaces

On 18th May, SheThePeople @SheThePeopleTV conducted a tweetchat on our handle @pinthecreep about women’s access to public spaces as a part of the Feminist Conference organised by them.

The chat began by first questioning the women present on the chat whether they have always felt the need to factor in thier safety when they travel within the city. They were then asked what steps they take to ensure their safety when travelling in a city, either one they live in or one they might be visiting. The question then opened to everyone on the chat to share their thoughts on what makes women vulnerable in public spaces and how women can reclaim the city, and public spaces, and renegotiate these spaces on their own terms. The chat ended by asking the audience for their suggestions on steps they would like the authorities to put into place to help women feel safer in public places.
