Creating a Resilient and Inclusive City- Urban Thinkers Campus

 

The Red Dot Foundation (Safecity) is hosting an Urban Thinkers Campus (UTC) in Mumbai on behalf of the UN Habitat and The Swedish Institute. This event is in partnership with Developmatrix, The Urban Vision, The US Consulate Mumbai, and DICE Districts. The focus of the event is Gender inclusive City Planning and its intersection with Mobility, Environment and Governance.

 

The UTC is meant to be a place to share, learn and define the way forward through individual and joint commitments to implement the New Urban Agenda. The format of the Campus is flexible and based on open facilitated sessions thus allowing for a high level of interaction. All participants will have equal opportunities to voice their views, ideas, and commitment to support their vision towards action.

The Youth Design Innovation Challenge

 

 

 

The Youth Design Innovation Challenge is part of the UTC and is designed to get youth to be actively involved in the City We Need by 2030. The challenge kicks off on 22 June and ends on 15 Dec. During these 4 months, we invite youth to participate in a day-long session on design thinking followed by a social incubator to create solutions that are hyper-local and low cost innovations that seek to address Gender inclusive City Planning and its intersection with Mobility, Environment and Governance.

 

This event is free and open to all. Registration is a must! All attendees will receive a certificate of participation.

Tackling Gender Inequality through Technology and Crowd-sourced Data

 

On 28th May, Elsa Dsilva, our Founder, spoke at two sessions about the work Safecity has been doing in providing a platform for women to share their stories. She facilitated an intimate session cum brainstorm with a few organisations and a young man who wants to be our first Campus Ambassador at Worq a co-working space.

She also spoke to 30 entrepreneurs at Magic, KUL’s Innovation Hub for Startups. The platform for this exchange of ideas and experiences were brought together by Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre, U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur, Social Enterprise Academy Malaysia & the Malaysian Chapter of Safecity: Sisterhood Alliance.

Featured in the Womennovator’s 100 Women Faces 2018 list

 

‘Womennovator 100 Women Faces 2018′, in association with Confederation of Women Entrepreneurs, launched a campaign wherein 100 women of substance and their stories were extensively covered. Elsa D’Silva, our Founder, has been featured in the Womennovator’s 100 Women Faces 2018 list.

 

 

Gram Sabha in Bihar

 

Two Gram Sabhas were organised by Safecity and our partner organisation, Nirman Foundation, in Bihar. This Gram Sabha was organised to discuss the issues of women safety and using technology to make places safer. Safecity has been conducting awareness workshops for the past 5 months about sexual harassment and the laws related to it in 2 villages in Bihar. The Mayor, Rotary Cheif as well as officials from the Department of Social Welfare attended the Sabha to meet the women and add their inputs.

Feminist Conference- by SheThePeople

 

Safecity partnered with SheThePeople for the #feministconference and put the spotlight on the new feminist dialogue, the conversations emerging on safe spaces, why a sense of ‘space’ is integral to the contemporary idea of feminism.

 

Panel Discussion- The Gender Gap at Work: What is impeding change? 

 

Elsa D’Silva, our Founder, moderated a panel discussion on gender gap at the workplace. The panelists were Apurva Purohit, Nirmika Singh and Gurrpriet Singh.

As a part of the Feminist Conference, Safecity conducted 3 tweetchats with partners Reboot Network, Litmus Test Project and SheThePeople.

 

  

 

Petition to make Holi safer and harassment-free

 

Safecity is petitioning for safer practices during Holi and for preventive measures to curb sexual harassment during Holi. Do support the petition by signing and sharing widely.

 

Safecity Emerging Leaders

 

Safecity is celebrating the journey of people who have emerged as leaders as our campaigns progressed in their communities through our blog series “Safecity Emerging Leaders”. Read the inspiring stories of these individuals who are passionate about making their neighbourhoods safer with Safecity and have taken action in their own special ways.

When we asked Rohan about his experience doing an internship with Safecity, this is what he had to say –

“The experience that I acquired through various projects helped me learn how to work with raw data and make relevant information out of it. I utilize this knowledge to build up more on my analytical skills as I pursue my higher studies in analytics. Working with Safecity has also helped on a personal level as it raised my awareness of sexual harassment, learning about this matter based on accurate statistics was an addition to my personal values and understanding of the social environment we live in.”

TweetChats

Through our tweetchats we are trying to facilitate important conversations around various issues related to gender in general and women’s issues in particular.
