Gender and Public Spaces

On Friday 7th September, Priyali Sur @priyalisur conducted a tweetchat on the different aspects of gender in public spaces.

The chat began by talking about the intersections between gender and social identities like caste, religion, region, race, sexuality, etc and the discrimination it causes. The curator invited her audience to share examples and instances they had experienced or witnesses relevant to the above. Priyali then went on to speak about public transport and gender and asked the audience’s opinion on gender segregation in public transport. The next part of the chat was sanitation and the issue of a lack of toilets that are free, safe and clean and the difficulties women and girls face die to the shortage. Priyali then spoke about public spaces in terms of women breastfeeding and the flak they have been facing for it. Priyali brought the chat to a close talking about women’s access and reclamation of public spaces and whether street art which depicts the emancipation of women can aid in women’s access.
