Damascus is my Favorite City in the World

Damascus, where I live, is my favorite place in the world. It is the capital of Syria and lays in the south, is known as the City of Jasmine, and its old part is considered to be among the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world.

While section of Damascus, the capital, is located on the slopes of Mount Qasioun, the largest part, including the old city, is located on the western shore of Barada River. The other modern cities are spread on the northern and western river’s shore. Damascus is surrounded by green areas of orchards, Ghouta, which is like heaven of the earth. The old city includes many neighborhoods with its buildings, streets, lanes, churches, mosques, historical schools, castle and famous markets. The modern part of the capital consists of modern buildings, malls, beautiful gardens, and wide streets.

The Damascene jasmine is distinguished by its fragrant scent that gives an impression of comfort and increases the joy of the place. Since ancient times, the residents of Damascus have been interested in planting roses and flowers indoors and outdoors. This symbolic flower inspired many poets to write about the beauty of Damascus and the fragrant scents emanating from every place and corner. And for many perfumers to discover wonderful perfumes that make you feel the fragrance of Damascus

Damascus is the oldest capital in the world, and some say it is the oldest inhabited city in the world as well. It was mentioned in most of the manuscripts of ancient civilizations. According to the excavations and research that focused on Ghouta and Barada River Valley, the Damascus area has been inhabited by humans for 10,000 years during the hunting and migration phase. Many villages and primitive settlements were found, as well as the oldest granaries in the world and some grains of barley and charred wheat. As for the way of life at that time, the first Damascenes built small oval huts that used mud, milk and reeds in their construction.

I feel proud that I was born and still live in Damascus. I wish everyone to visit my city to get acquainted with its old and modern places, to smell the fragrance of its Damascene rose and Jasmine, and to spend enjoyable times with its kind residents who are known for their welcoming of people and visitors.
