Do not be afraid, let's talk about it

I was working on my senior thesis research proposal, which was due within two days. I did enough research and was feeling quite sleepy. I looked up for my phone to check the time and it was 2:30 am . I logged into my instagram account and saw a post by one of my favorite photographers. He wrote " Do you face a phase in your life, where you do not have any energy, you do not know the purpose of anything.Everything become meaningless. There is nothing to wake up for every morning. Nothing to accomplish ... " And I thought everyone of us in one way or another way feel the same way. Everything in our life seems well, but deep down, we are not happy and the problem is we do not know the reason. If the situation stays quiet for longer term, we name that as " Depression".

Here it is really important to know the difference between being sad and being depressed. I myself came to know about it very recently. In one of the sessions organized by the wellness center at our University, where Mam Rania, a well-known psychologist told us the difference. If a person is sad, it mean there is some reason behind that, but being sad without any reason is called depression, though we use both of them for the same purpose. The reason, why I am talking about the difference is we have to know whether we are actually sad or depressed, then we can start working on it.

I can give my own example. I am going to complete my undergraduate life very soon and I am very excited about it. I am hoping to have more adventures, more experiences, more learning, self growth and much more for my upcoming life. Let's be honest here. Every one of us have a story of struggle. Though they are not the same, but they all are worth telling. If you are going to complete one of the milestones of your life, then definitely you have gone through some sort of challenges or struggles, don't you?  We all face criticisms, hatred at some point of our life. People tries to put us down and make feel us like we cannot do anything in our lives. And somehow they are being successful in this. We take their comments too seriously and starts thinking about those. With the passage of time, we also starts thinking what they wants us to think. We blame ourselves, lose our interests in our studies, leave what we love to do, lose hope, stop talking to people around us, which mostly leads to depression and people find it difficult to come out of it and they find suicide as an ultimate solution.

If a person is suffering from depression, of course it is not easy for her/him to discuss about it, because the person does not know her/himself what she/he feels. There have been so many cases, where the person tried to approach others’ for help, but there are no prominent results. It is very important to share your problems with your close one or you think of a person, who can understand you and close to you. In this way you can feel a little bit comfortable. If that is not the case, write down whatever is going in your mind. Trust me writing helps a lot. Reading self- help books is also another great source. If you think, you are in depression, try to change your routine or day to day activities. Do whatever you love to do. This way your mind will divert. I know it is difficult to do all these, but nothing is impossible. Please Please do not be too harsh on yourselves, because you have a beautiful life ahead of you.

Do not afraid to share your problem, let’s talk about it.

Hello there:-)

You're welcome! I'm very glad to hear you are doing well:-)

Great!

Hope you have a great week. Looking forward to hearing what your plans are post-graduation:-)

Hello, Yusra,

You are so brave to share about this mental health issue. Your post resonates with me because I have been clinically diagnosed with depression, and it took a while for my husband to understand that when I feel depressed, it is not because of sadness alone. I learn to cope now, and this online community is my happy place. Weird it may be, but I fight depression by reading about our sisters stories and I find inspiration from their resiliency and courage.

I am grateful that you took some time to write about this. It encourages more women to speak out about rather than suffer in silence alone. Depression is not something to be ashamed of. You are right, we need to talk about it. Please keep posting!:)

Dear Karen,

Trust me I am really grateful for you to read the post and also give your thoughts about it. I totally agree with you that World Pulse platform is a place, where we all find strength and encouragement to talk and connect with each others.

Thank you, Yusra! I've written about depression on this platform, too. :)

Dear Yusra,
What an important and healing message. I so agree, we can get isolated in depression if we don't find a way to let it be released, and you have offered a big opening to the discussion, and some suggestions that can really work: talk with others, write, read what others have to say. We deal with such painful issues, we get such negative responses, especially as change makers, and not only but also too often, directly as women who are insisting on change. I add to Jill's invitation to be in touch any time, and to Karen's, that here in World Pulse is where I gain the strongest optimism that together we are sharing and building together a new and beautiful reality.

Depression is due to a lack of energy and tiredness. That's why it's important to walk away from home or do some physical exercises. This is the best way to evacuate our bad feelings.

Dear Assad,
Yes environment plays an immense role in one's life.If the environment is being the reason of our depression, we have to come up with solutions for that. Hope to hear more from you and welcome to the family of WorldPulse.

I like your story. Moments of sadness and depression come into life and one is consoled or soothed when one speaks about it or reads stories about the experiences of others. However, prayer with faith helped me overcome such situations. That is to confide in God who is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent.
May God bless you Yusra
