Bridgender Gap Global meets victims of obstetric Fistula in Cameroon on this World Fistula Day 23 May 2018

BGG Giving Hope to Fistula Victims

On this World Fistula Day 23rd of May 2018 Bridgender Gap Global Oragnisation joins the world to call to an end of Obstetric Fistula. - #EndObstetricFistula. In order to end this devastating childbirth injury, countries must ensure universal access to reproductive health services; eliminate gender-based social and economic inequities; prevent child marriage and early childbearing; promote education and broader human rights, especially for girls; and encourage community involvement, says the UNFPA.

Bridgender Gap Global Organisation travels to Cameroon in the North West region, in the remote area of Benakuma, a village in Wum sub division to talk to fistula victims. Hear the story of this young girl and her struggles with obstetric fistula.

Most of the women are young first-time mothers, in this condition they are often abandoned by their husbands, boyfriends or partner because they leak, and they smell. They may find it difficult to secure income or support themselves, thereby deepening their poverty.

Their isolation may affect their mental health, resulting in depression, low self-esteem and even suicide. Obstetric fistula is a stark outcome of gender inequalities, human rights denial and poor access to reproductive health services, including maternal and new-born care, an indication of high levels of maternal death and disability.

The psychological harm suffered by its victims make it a form of violence against women as per the definition of Violence Against Women (VAW) by the United Nations Declaration on Elimination of violence against women (1993) as: \"… any act of gender based violence that results in physical sexual and psychological harm or suffering to women including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether in public or private life\".

Bridgender Gap Global is closing the gap by promoting better access to reproductive health care to obstetric fistula victims in the remote areas in Cameroon where access to reproductive care is a problem. There is no Fistula centre or hospital in the North West or South West region in Cameroon. Victims are left on their own and very often are NOT even aware of the condition that they are suffering from. Those who are aware and have the financial support must travel hundreds of kilometres on bad roads to the capital city for treatment where there is a fistula Centre.

Today Bridgender Gap Global is soliciting for your support - your very kind donation to help us as we try to establish a Fistula drop-in Centre where victims can meet to be informed, not only how to sort treatment for their condition but to meet others suffering with the same condition knowing that they are not alone. A centre where they can come together and share their stories knowing that a problem shared is half solved; a centre where they can come together and engage in activities such as arts and crafts as a means of therapy, at the same time producing some merchandise to economically empower themselves.

We want to take this opportunity and say a big thank you to @MGEngDrama club at Haberdasher Monmouth School for Girls (HMSG) in South Wales United Kingdom for their kind donation – of 350.00-pound sterling fund raised as they helped us sell handmade jewellery crafted by fistula victims in Ethiopia and Cameroon during school fairs and bazar. Thank you HMSG especially to my beautiful daughters Ngum and Azoh Mofor for taking this initiative forward. A big thank you also goes to my lovely friend and sister in Christ aunty Muliti Mosisa for helping to coordinate these activities.

Together we can continue to make a difference one step at a time in our own little ways Please support us by donating whatever amount that you can. You will be surprised…Every little helps
