Sexualization of women



Use of women's bodies as sexual symbols has been increasing over time across the world. This includes magazines, music, television, movies and social media. People are constantly being exposed to the sexual objectification of women. The problem lies in the commercialization of women in the global media and popular culture. While men are considered as leaders, women are deemed to be valuable only as cheerleaders. Children are growing up in a culture where a lot of focus is placed on their bodies and their looks, which makes them consider themselves as sexual objects. In a woman’s case, being a sex symbol automatically comes with the assumption that she is unintelligent. Overt commoditisation of women often leads to self-objectification and lower self-esteem.

It is problematic when nearly all images of women depict them not simply as ‘sexy women’ but as passive objects for someone else’s desire. This stereotypical worldview makes it hard for younger women to create their own personalities and identities. So, I would suggest to create awareness in the mainstream media for promoting positive, active and sportive images of women who are not dictated by conventional social norms based on the public/private division and inspire women to be achievers in professional lives.
