A Strong Woman

When a strong woman is born

Her parents sigh with relief

They know this little baby one day

Will hold their hands to light.

When a strong woman grows up

Her clan celebrates

In her gimmicks they see

The big things she will do to bring honour to them.

When a strong woman marries

Her new family becomes more confident

Her silent power keeps the home, warm

And their days busy and full.

When a strong woman gives birth

Her child/ren enters this world fortunate

To have a role model at home

And grow up into a strong person because they know no weakness.

But it is when the storms come

The thunder paralyses others

That the value of a strong woman

Will be felt the most

When the droughts dry up life on earth

The spring of life of a strong woman

Will keep her family and community from perishing.

Dedicated to one such 'strong woman' in my life, my sister Purnima Chanam on the occasion of her birthday on 20th December 2020.

Dearest Bessandra,
If we look around ourselves we will find many strong women in our lives who have faced unthinkable challenges and never let hope for a better day. I am astounded by the resilience of women across the world not just in my community. Let us tell them how they inspire us. May they feel more confident and happy about themselves.
Love and prayers,

Dear Urmila,
What a precious gift to a sister, and to all of us who have the chance to read this. The world and everyone in it celebrates strong women. I hope Purnima is still flying with this birthday dedication.
Love,
Tam

Dearest Tamarack,
I still remember the beautiful poem you had written for an Orange woman farmer and given it to me in 2018. I had given the poem to the local government head to be shared with the woman. These poems are extension of our admiration and most of all our encouragement that we have learnt from World Pulse. Also something you do tirelessly, sister! Wish you and your dad a merry Christmas and a happy new year all the way from India.
Much love and hugs,
Urmila Chanam

My dear sister,
That was a true celebration of what our connections within World Pulse can make happen, that a woman farmer in your country can get a message from a woman who has farmed here. Thank you for your wishes, I am sending back much love to you and your family for a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Hugs across the ocean,
Tam
