Letter of hopes!

Firstly, I would like to congratulate and wish you all the best with lots of hopes!!
I am Ms Usha K.C. from Nepal where the peace process has still been going on after ten years of civil-war. Currently, I am preparing for my thesis (Masters, Sociology) on the topic of "Violence against women/girls”.

This time I have been festinated by the happiness due to getting the chance to write this letter to you.
Women violence is now global burning issue and it’s being rooted deeply day by day. In every aspect such as at home, working area, public vehicle, community, everywhere, women become a victim of violence.
Nepal naturally very beautiful but due to patriarchal value based society the situation of the half of its population are still taking their breath with lots of pain and they are compelled to take their tear back due to violence against them. Violence not only occur on uneducated but highly educated also have been became victim. The whole society has been affected by the patriarchal norms values, and some time religious beliefs also play the vital role. Each day any women has been tolerating the pain of violence and remaining silent to report because her voice has less chance to be heard just because of discriminatory attitude. Men always feel superior to women and women cannot take part in decision-making process with in family as well as community. Subordinated life is another women’s obligation so that she always feel she is just the means of reproduction and the unpaid labor for household work.

Although the new constitution provides for equality for all there is still discrimination which helps to make the good environment for occurring of many forms of violence against women. The most common forms of violence occurring in my country are: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE,CHILD MARRIGE,POLYGAMY,WITCHCRAFT ,DOWRY RELATED,SEXUAL HARRESMENT,RAPE(marital and non marital),GIRLS TRAFFICKING,UNEQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK,WIFE BATTERING,WIDOWS RELATED VIOLENCE( as they are taken as unlucky during any social function),SELECTIVE ABORTION and FORCE CONCEPTION.

Violence against women has been crossing its climax day by day. Selective abortion has been killing the countless girls before their birth. After birth, are facing the terrified life every day. Family prefers son as they are taken as a regulator of heredity. In education, diet, dresses and freedom there is immense discrimination between daughter and son and by this discriminative behavior girls became mentally suppressed.
Every journey becomes agitated for girls in public vehicle as they face unwanted touches over their body. In working area also they get troublesome due to sexual harassment.
Hundred of our sisters are being trafficked to neighboring country India’s cities. They have been sold by their own husband, uncle and other relatives. Many girls are forced to marry. After marriage, women should bear the many forms of violence either mentally or physically. Violence can be related to dowry, marital rape, unwanted conception, reproductive rights and so on. Women most follow the rule and order given by husband/and other members of In-law’s house otherwise she should bear the lots of cry of pain.
Helpless, poor and aged women taken as witchcraft and they get the physically and mentally punishment by the community.

I became very much worried and make my eyes moist when I read the news regarding violence in newspaper or become informed by other means. I always think how I can play the role to renovation this pathetic situation of women. Until this violence alive no development is taken place. It’s the most challenging issue and we must stop violence against women for balance, justice and development.
Now, I have germinated some seeds of hope by conveying this letter in front of you.
