Happy birthday of the city of God. Are 50 years of many stories of love and respect for life!

I am Valeria Barbosa, Brazilian, I live in Rio de Janeiro, I do communication popular in the slum known throughout the world for the film City of God.

I arrived in the City of God, in 1968, removed from the beach slum in Pinto located in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The place where I lived was highly valued, due to the speculation decided to remove all shacks. People did not want to leave. It was close to their jobs and schools for their children, then they promoted an arson fire that burned several huts, forcing people to accept the change order. All residents were removed along with their belongings, they went to the other place in garbage trucks. I was still a girl.

I started working com13 years old, was maid, took care of a lady. I never stopped studying.

Working for 42 years for the City of God.

Today I live in another neighborhood, but it's as if I lived in the City of God. Now here I am, writing about the work I do in the community. Most of my friends lives of CDD, and my dream is community well: I wish the best gift for our place. The right to live to be happy, have a quality education for children and young people. They deserve a promising future and decent health care also would like to have in the community, a house with special care for the elderly who live alone and have basic support.

I am part of the City of God.

I was stronger after participating in the WorlPulse, my writing became stronger and I became more caring. Writing is my gun. I use it in the actions we advocate.
To have the right to speak in a slum, you must learn to deal with the powers that interfere in people's lives, we must have the strength and have protection strategies, the work must continue. We have to give priority to respect people and understand the proposed enhancement of life and believe that it is possible to bring meaningful information to all.

We can not get into a power war. We must learn to walk in silence and scream as light, with all the forces of the words that value people and bring them to reflect on their lives and the possible strategies. Using visual arts, music, poetry, theater, journalism ...

The City of God has more than 52,000 inhabitants, has a quarterly journal, ours, which tells their stories. We talk about local events, which value people.

We need not speak of crimes, trafficking or marginal. Already have a media that has this function. The vast majority living in slums are honest people responsible for their lives and the development of the country, are working, pay their taxes, preserve and develop the place where they live.

So, What did we want to the Journal?

Show the place, the City of God. Valuing local people. Show how good and important for everyone to know work and people who do the best for the community. The reader of City of God need to know what happens in the community, as it is important for everyone. It is necessary to strengthen and give visibility to their actions. Encourage them to participate in the features offered by the institutions. Talk about the psychological services. Having your work recognized, respected and be sure that their behavior and influences the behavior of others.

Our newspaper is the Community. It has a print run of 3,500 copies, 16 Pages and is beautiful. The newspaper has color photos of people and places of the City of God.
The newspaper won two awards, one of Rio Institute - Award Geraldo Jordan, and the other prize is the Municipal Secretariat of Culture of Rio de Janeiro. The award and very important. Having a newspaper considered a cultural action is very important. Our group did not even have a their own space.

The Journal has a partnership with a local institution to ASVI- Seed Association ASVI We use the building for meetings and Administrative Support.

Lately we have also made meetings in Residence of the newspaper's employees. It is more to join the group, and the members feel how important they are in this group and the community.

We will perform from July, 5 workshops with the intention of attracting more residents in the journal collaboration and cover other own community sites in the free distribution of the newspaper. Workshops: design; photography, video and video editing; critical reading; Portuguese; the visual-communication layout.

After the workshops, we will hold a People's Communication Seminar. We introduce other existing forms of communication in the community.

The big news is that all professionals who teach these workshops were formed in our newspaper and are now protagonists of this project and will have a salary for their classes.

We are also building a Blog. We have a page on facebook, which is being modified. The newspaper is gaining a new visual identity. We want a newspaper that the community and local institutions to identify.

We have participated in many events, we talked about these newspaper and took the opportunity to invite people to join our group.

We are living a very special moment.

We arrived here with the help of many people: SOLTEC / UFRJ- Farmanguinhos, ASVI, Ministry of Culture, River and the Municipal Institute of Culture, NPC- Core Piratininga communication, but we can not deny the importance of residents s who took this challenge and made a beautiful reality.

And I just have to thank learning for months with the World Pulse that made me a fearless and conscious leader responsible for promoting ideas, discover talents and stories, to give visibility to the community I chose to dedicate myself, chat and give voice my community, City of God.
