living with an autistic child

Posted November 29, 2021 from Haiti

I have a son who is autistic and hyperactive. Autism was not a word I even heard of before the physician would mention it to me.  I had a very difficult pregnancy where I was hospitalized for three days because I was dehydrated due to many days of not eating properly and emesis. When I gave birth to my son, there was nothing abnormal medical-wise.

My husband and I would make remarks on his way of being, even though we were unaware of anything wrong, that he would not answer or respond at all to noises. My husband would only say " this little boy ignores me when I call him." We did not see anything wrong than the fact that all children are different.

One day, we went to the women's center for his regular check-up. One of the nurses, who knew him well would call his name. He did not respond. The nurse asked me, does he have a hearing problem. I answered no. I informed her that the hospital where he was born had already done a test to make sure that he had no hearing issue.

Another day, I went to the family doctor for other minor issues he had. When it was our turn to get inside the office. I was not able to communicate with the doctor properly because he was all over the place, not following any instructions to sit quietly. This is when the doctor realized there was something wrong with him then she ordered us to go to the pediatrician. In our multiple visits to the pediatrician. The pediatrician also noticed something wrong in his behavior.

Autism is not well known in countries like Haiti. Every day think about other children who are in the same situation who are not diagnosed, they are misunderstood by their parents and other healthcare professionals because they are not aware is this disorder.

Hello Wathleine,

Congrats on your first post!

Thanks for sharing, dear. How long ago was your son diagnosed? How do you feel about it now?
