70% of Cameroonian girls are illiterate

"70% of Cameroonian girls are illiterate" - UNESCO Institute of Statistics, 2016

Brings to mind these words by Kumari Dhruti...."The hand that rocks the cradle, the procreator, the mother of tomorrow; a woman shapes the destiny of civilization. Such is the tragic irony of fate, that a beautiful creation such as the girl child is today one of the gravest concerns facing humanity"

Today is World Education Day, what are you doing to educate girls in your community?

Hi Welisane,

Oh, wow.... what a horrible stat, dear! Is this the whole country, the Anglophone region because of the war, or just in general? I just keep thinking, that can't be right. At least, I hope it isn't.... eek. I'm glad you're helping to make this a thing of the past.

Hope you're doing well, and having a good, safe week.

Helo sister!
Thanks for that information. It is sad to know that more than 50% of cameroonian girls are illeterates.
Knowledge is power but on the on the other hand people still prevent the girl child in particular from going to school to acquire knowledge. They fail to know that women are mothers of tomorrow and they shape the destiny of civilization as you rightly said.
Keep up dear sister, educate the girl child.

Hello, Welisane,

That’s a disturbing fact. 70% is quite a high number. Access to education is certainly a human right. It goes without saying that this is a human rights violation.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

Dear Welisane,
It is such a beautiful thing to read about the great work that you are doing for our girls in Cameroon. I came across some statistics which are somehow different from what you have here....talking about the literacy rate among young girls in Cameroon

http://uis.unesco.org/en/country/cm

Keep doing what you are doing for our beloved nation.

Cheers!

Hello Welisane,
This is not a good statistic. We hope the Government of Cameroon is working towards lowering this rate. Thank you for the effort that you putting towards this cause. We hope and pray that more families and people in the communities are sensitized about the importance of education of the girl child.
Keep us updated on the progress.

Dear Weli,

Thanks for such an eye opening post. Those statistics are scary though. I am glad you are however conscious about it and doing your widow's mite to fight such illiteracy.
All the best
