LAUNCH OF SEXUAL OFFENDERS REGISTER IN NIGERIA

To commemorate the 16  Days of Activism,  On Monday 25th November 2019, Nigeria launched the Sexual Offenders Register to name and shame persons who have been convicted of sexual offenses across the country in line with the 2015 Violence against Persons Prohibition Act.

Before a problem can be addressed, it must first be recognized. Before mothers and sisters and aunts and grammas can keep families safe, we must know where threats exist. Registering sex offenders is a necessary step to keep our neighborhoods and neighbors safe. Thanks for letting us know that Nigeria is now making this risk to peace where you live known.

Dear Oluwatoyin,
This is tremendous news. Establishing this register makes it official that this violence is taking place and that the Government recognizes that it is criminal behaviour. A big step forward to send out this message and hopefully stop men from thinking they have the right to be violent. Hopefully this step forward in Nigeria will set precedent for others to follow.
