2013 VOF Week 3: Education

Our grandmothers would go to school to learn to read and write. Only those whose parents had lots of money could attend college. But i think in my country we have been very fortunate in that regard. The greatest girl ileeteracy problem starts when the girl falls pregnant and she had to stay at home and look after the child while the boyfriend carries on with his schooling. Sometimes the girl's parents would chase her away with her child to go and fend for herself. In this case I believe a solution is presenting sex education in an early age. Knowledge is power.
Another situation hich presents barriers to girl education in my opinion is the case of street children. These girls run away from home for so many different reasons most of which is abuse. These girls mostly are in primary school age and chances of going back to school are slim. Some of them get raped, fall pregnant, are killed and are just left with no hope of a better life. I know this solution is far fetched but to deal with this matter I would actually suggest that our government initiates a programme where every month social workers visit house by house to ensure the wellbeing of the children especially. Our government is already offering places, welfare houses for these children but that system is failing because these children are not used to be confined so they break out from these safe houses. With my proposal the social workers would be able to notice any signs of abuse or illtreatment and report it to the officials. I think this would help these children live normal lives not characterised by violence which is the source of their fleeing from home into the streets.
Children herding homes because of HIV?AIDS is a great problem in our country. About 80% of these are girls. They are forced to leave school find jobs with which to take care of their siblings. This sometimes leads to these girls being molested, abused sexually for money. Unwanted pregnancies surface and the cycle of HIV/AIDS is repeated. I think the solution to this is free education, household monetory subsidies for children in these cases so that the older girl does not have to sacrifice her life for her siblings.
