The Secret Enemy-FGM

FGM Kills

Another chapter of my life yet to be reveal.

Growing up as a teenager it was normal and accepted. It was an initiation into womanhood as we were all made to believe. The actual age to undergo such practice was between twelve years to fourteen. Twelve years for heavily built girls and fourteen for less built.

I recalled when we who are not initiated yet will be mocked day in and day out for our lack of maturity. We are never qualify to join them in any of their activities. We were then called "the green leave", Meaning the innocent.

Day in and day out I cry to my mother when it will be my turn. My mother will called my name and say dear you are not yet up in age to undergo such practice.

When I  hear her say that I will go furious and cry until night fall. At time out of anger I could cry myself to sleep without sleep. The innocent of FGM makes me so all the odd.

Finally, another day has arrived for another group of girls to undergo their FGM practice. This time I was not yet in age to join them. But I could see the excitement in their faces, their parents and their entire families. It was a feast. The new clothing, sandals, beads for their waist wear and what of you made every appealing from my point of view.

It's always done by child birth female attendance. Those days these women are more like our current mid wives. Most live in the villages with us and others are brought in from far away villages due to their experiences.

The practice takes place in the mid afternoon to avoid blood clothing within some girls. This time is perfect since the sun will be scorching.

You are to come to the birth attendant with your gadgets. When I say gadgets I mean the tools for the "operation" along with your mum next to you.

Your both legs will be tied together with that of your mum whilst she holds your two hands tiedly, leaving you with less room to escape. I have a sample picture as to how that looks. I tell you very very scary.

The norm behind this, is that when the critories are removed you will be less active in sex, hence you be tamed from becoming a prostitute. Like really?

As curious as I were with my "CID " team. We decided to see what happens in there. If most of you are familiar with the African home setting then you will understand this more. The bathrooms are mostly open top roof. No roof so we stood on stools at the back of the bathroom at the back of the house to video every single moment with our naked eye.

Believe you me, I felt sick by force of the sight in the evening. The following morning my mother worsen my sickness with a deadly news. One of the girls loss a lot of blood and had passed away. What a shocked I had that day.

Since then I started my plan of escape when it's my turned. Surely, I succeeded. A neatly clear plan of exit.

The day come, I was told my mother glamorous walked to bring me to the birth attendant but no where was I to be found.

I left far far away visiting my grandmother in another village. That was it. When I returned later all was passed. My mother who was superstitious then believe there was a reason why I left and she will never let "me" or any of her daughter's take part in such a practice.

The "Jesu Christ" of the family have done it again. Saved her life and that of her siblings.

As part of this mother's day month please we mother's in Africa specifically let's do away with this barbarian act. Imagine just few side effects

1. Difficulty in child birth

2. Featullar and even

3.  Death

Join me let's remove this cancer of a killer of our innocent girls in Africa.

FGM is a Killer!

Kill it before it kills your daughter!

Hi Jill,
Thanks for your comment. It's really scary when I got to see it in reality.
Unlike it we were all innocent about the whole situation as we are being lure into it.

All they tell us it's not painful, it's simple and the benefit is great. You get to get a good husband and so on.

Resilience and superstitiousness have safe me with my siblings.
Weird!
What is shocking is that even today the practice is still going on in parts of Africa still. The do it in secrecy now.

What bravery you showed in running away. What courage your mother showed in standing with her daughters. I thank you for sharing your story and stand with you.

Haha by then I run out of fear ooo not bravery. I was scared I will died haha.
In a kind of way I got the courage to escape. Yes, my mother is very superstitious and she read meaning to every single actions. She believes I was guided to escape by the ancestors ha.
That case they did excellent, I mean the ancestors.
Thanks for the comments.
It's appreciated.

Lisbeth, thank you for sharing this, profound and painful. I hear your pain, I see you, I hear you. I took time to re-read this imagine how that must have felt, seeing that, and then the courage of sharing this with us. Thank you for sharing this call, this reality that so many of us need to hear and understand your experience.
