For What Do I Long?

I long for a way to detach without creating fear of loss in myself or others.
This seems to be the challenge for many friends, fathers, and mothers.
There comes a point in our intense involvement in another’s life
When we must distance ourselves from involvement in their strife.

We want to show compassion, but this must be done responsibly;
We cripple each other when we refuse to set each other free.
The dance of detachment is not a turning away from caring
It is a vote of confidence in the path and plan we’ve been sharing.

To insist on continually holding hands can be a limitation;
With the use of only one hand, we can’t applaud in celebration.
There is always a risk of loss when we take a step back;
I longed for the confidence in shared spirit that I often lacked.

It’s been a long time longing for a way to deal with detachment;
I believe this is the path to peace on earth for which we are all sent.
Continued life of loved ones’ spirits is that to which I attest;
This is the way that I choose to deal with life and death.

It is not only in our children that we are being fruitful and multiplying our spirits; it is in every person and part of creation that we touch with our lives that we leave a part of ourselves.
