Let`s educate the Society first

On the last day of International Anti-Street Harassment week on 2015, The Asian University for Women`s, Speak up club members went out to streets in Chittagong, Bangladesh to create awareness about street sexual harassment. Asian University for Women in Bangladesh recruited young women from 16 Asian countries to educate and empower them. Students from the university always stand for all forms of injustice and question the responsible authorities in consent ways. Like as, the students of the university run a club named as Speak up club arranged an awareness event for Chittagong , Bangladesh people about sexual harassment on the streets. In the current world, one of the emerging issues is sexual harassments on streets.

My experiences in Bangladesh would give a bigger picture that how do women and young girls face sexually harassments while walking on the street. No matter whether you are a foreigner or local citizen, every day when you go on the street you expect to harass by some body. So many times, I questioned myself whether women get harass just because of their clothing and the way that they exposure themselves in the street and of course my hypothesis failed to give the answer as yes. If men find you as women according to the biological structure they will try to harass you. The reason could be according to my ideology that men especially, Asian men consider women as an object than a human begin.

Therefore, on the week of Anti-Harassment, students of the University got into Chittangong streets and educate men especially about harassment. They did talk to so many people on the streets explaining that how do men need to respect women, what is harassment, how does it affect a women`s life and so on. The students distribute flyers and message boards to raise awareness about street harassment, to ask people to share their messages, to raise their voice, and to join the campaign. The responses were different, but most people were very curious and interested to know about the campaign. Many asked us what they could do to help end it. In addition, the students had designed and prepared all the flyers in Bengali language (Local language) to be able to reach out to all the lay people.

At the end of the day, I feel the campaign could give a positive effect on people in Chittagong to think about the Harassment and I do understand that changes would not be over night. By doing this, I hope we put one step ahead to create a change for future generation and it will gradually accepted by the people soon.
