2013 VOF Week 2: The Power is in Our Hands

These are fascinating times. We are connected to friends, strangers and even workmates in ways that we never thought was possible. At the click of a button I am able to access wide ranging news; those with the power to bring tears to my eyes and those that passionately opens up my heart to a possible future. The understanding that I can also rise up to be counted is all the more significant.

The possibilities presented to me over the years in the virtual world have been too many for me to count. From job opportunities to being a member of causes that are close to my heart, I am forever indebted to the World Wide Web. Year 2012 marked the hallmark for me.

Not only did I stumble upon life changing events but I became connected to youngsters from all over the world who are committed to creating change in their societies. Through Funds for NGOs a platform that lists numerous opportunities available, I created the first meaningful contact with Global Change makers a platform that brings together young social entrepreneurs.

The beauty of making face to face interactions with these young entrepreneurs proved how globalised the world has become. For a week, we were drawn to each other sharing about our unique causes in our respective countries. But above all it is the mentorship we received from the various heads of organizations that meant more to me. I did learn a great deal about management of projects with a social cause. While we were not able to stay together forever, networks such as Facebook, linked in, blogs and twitter have continued to keep us together yet far apart.

My first ordeal in virtual office was also in 2012 where I spent time as a member of the Public Relations team at Toonari Post- a grassroots journalism network for young people. With friends from all over the world we planned for programs and projects that I hope will see the light of day.

It is an adventure like no other. People from diverse backgrounds are brought together to create a better world. But perhaps the most significant platform for me is the ability to bring to other significant voices to the world. Through Global People Project, I realized how important it is for so many people; young and old, educated and uneducated, cultured or uncultured for them to share their views of life. With the team in Kenya Global People Project sought the views of people from all walks of life.

The simple knowledge that together we were able to bring the views of this diverse Kenyans to the whole world keeps me going and striving to establish citizen journalism for young people in my country. The realization that each one of us has immense power to create the change we desire keeps me going. The virtual world is a true friend, one that educates, informs and entertains.
