Africa Code Week 2017

I have been planning to organize coding workshops in schools where I have launched InspireIT STEM Club. So,while I was planning and making preparations for the workshops, I received an email from Cape Town Science Centre South Africa. InspireIT hasbeing chosen as an Africa Code Week Google Micro Grant recipient for 2017,you can imagine my excitement!.

Africa Code Week is on missiontoempower future generations with the coding tools and skills they need to thrive in the 21st century workforce, spread digital literacy across the continent and to improvedigital skills and employment perspectives for girls and women in emerging and developing countries.

Preparations in top gear for Africa Code Week 2017 andfeedback from schools received, I set out to Port Harcourt in Rivers State and Ohafia in Abia State, Nigeria to organize coding workshops for selected primary and secondary schools.

InspireIT codingworkshoptitled "Learn a Skill, Learn Coding,"kicked off with a discussion session on Computer Science, and the kind of jobs one can pursue with a Computer Science degree. We also discussed few women in STEM and why we need more women in STEM.This was followed by question and answer session. After the question and answer session, we took 30 minutes break and the students were provided with refreshments. After the break, we started thehands-on coding session. Apart from the laptops, we also bought cardboards and markers for the session. The students were paired in groups of four and each group worked as a team. The workshop was very interactiveand the students had fun learning about websites, HTML, Javascript and CSS. Students from Potter's Court Primary School Port Harcourt Rivers State, Ohafia Girls Model Secondary School Abia State, Triumph Comprehensive School Abia State and Interkince College Ohafia Abia State participated in the workshop.
