The information super higway has evolved by leaps and bounds giving rise to opporrtunities which have inevitably brought the world to a click. Internet most especially web 2.0 on which digital media, social media and social networking happen have stopped at nothing to make people especially women find ways of connecting , supporting ,sharing with and mentoring each other.
What thrills me most about web 2.0 is the invaluable offer of being able to post information written by me and which reflects my local and personal realities. Social networks like Hi5,facebook,twitter enable me voice my opinions and the opinions of many other women with whom I work. It gives me a sense of fulfillment as I am not under any obligation to follow any editorial policy. It is also exciting to be able to share my experiences with or without a training or career in journalism. As a journalist by profession who is into community work, it is an avenue to maintain and improve my writing skills through continuos writing and feedback. This Citizen Journalist opportunity is one of such offers which makes me marvel at the wonders of web 2.0. The web 2.0 platform delights me because it brings the world within my grasp. I learned about Voices of our Future program from Peace and Collaborative Development Network which is a digital media site used for professional enhancement opportunities. These blood stirring aspects of web 2.0 can be used as solutions to global women empowerment movements.
With the arrival of web 2.0, from the comfort of homes or cyber cafes, women continuously reach out to one another through chats, blogpost or tweets with an option to read or send material in any language of their choice. Also, blogs have brought together women with a common vision thereby pooling moral,professional and sometimes financial support for the benefit of all women irrespective of race,color,religion or sexual orientation. Distance or language is no barrier.These strong virtual communities have given rise to women leaders who have changed their communities with the support of fellow women online.An important part of women empowerment is mentorship of women changemakers. Programs like World pulse, Acumen Online Leadership essentials which are part of web 2.0 play a vital role in shaping the lives and works of these female globe shakers.
The web 2.0 platform tools have been and continue to be empowering to me on a personal and professional level. Personally, digital media helps shape my personality. Leadership courses like Acumen Online Leadership Essentials have given my attitude a new positive twist. Facebook empowers me in that I am able to share my opinion and get ideas and suggestions with facebook friends. It also brings me closer to people with similar visions and keeps me informed on recent happenings. Professionally, web 2.0 links me to people in thesame field through facebook groups, yahoogroups and even World Pulse online community. All in all, with a click, I am heard and I hear others.
