About Me: My name is Aneela Shamshad and I am a Pakistani living in Islamabad. I work in development and feel that education is the only solution to most of the problems that my country is facing. The more I thought about it, the more convinced I was. Two years back I started a small school in a village outside Islamabad. The school was a one room facility which at that time catered to children from very poor families who had never been to school before. We just had one class which was a nursery class. One year later we started another class i.e. class 1 and furnished the classroom too. In 2014 we started a grade 2 and furnished another classroom. Today we have a staff of 3 teachers and a support person. We pay rent for the 3 rooms in which we are running the school. It is my desire to upgrade the school but on account of limited resources we are unable to do so. In this school we do not charge any fee and we provide textbooks and exercise books for the students for free. Apart from that we also provide all the stationery for the year and all required learning aids that teachers may need.

My Passions: I want to see all the underprivileged children of my country to have access to quality education.

My Challenges: I have limited financial resources for making education available to all those children who are deprived of it.

My Vision for the Future: Quality education for all children in Pakistan irrespective of their social status.

My Areas of Expertise: Education

Dear Aneela,

What you are doing is so extremely important. Your caring and determination shine through your words. It is both encouraging and amazing, what you have accomplished in the beginning years of this school. The growth shows the success of your hard work. Each child taught by you and the other teachers, will never forget or lose the benefit that you provide. I hope that by your letting this global community know about your school, that funds will somehow come to make all the expansion that you need, possible. We are all strengthened by knowing what you are accomplishing. I hope that in return, you feel the caring of sisters around the world.

With Love in Sisterhood,

Tamarack

Dear Tamarack, I am glad that you understand the value of the work we are doing. It gives us a new energy to work with more diligence. The area where I have set up the school is mixed community of muslims and christians. Most of the people in the community are daily wage workers. If they find work on a good day, there is food on the table for the family. Thus education for their children is the last thing on their minds. The teachers that we have engaged are from within the community. In this way I have made my humble effort to provide an opportunity to these women to earn and contribute to the family income. This empowers them and uplifts their status within their community and family. Just to share with you, one of my teachers husband just sits back home and does not do anything. She is the one who earns and runs the house. What has actually happened is that due to the initiative we have taken, she takes decisions in the house and is more respected by her family. I consider this our success and a turning point for the rural women. I do understand that you may have limitations, but I am assuming that are part of a sisterhood. Can you help us in raising funds for our initiative. I have been approached by a few more people to start schools in their communities which are very remote and there are no educational facilities close by. I would appreciate it if you would be kind enough to help us in this regard. If you need more information or pictures that showcase our work, I'd be happy to send them to you. Please share with friends in your circle. My email id is aneelashamshad333@hotmail.com.

Dear Aneela,

I am glad for your reply and for the additional information about your work. The turning points that you describe are monumental, and it is exciting to know that through your work, others are encouraged to provide education in their communities as well. Although I cannot promise immediate financial support, I want you to know that I am committed to finding organizations in my country, and sisters, who can help financially for work such as yours. Sending photos and information would be welcome so that I can describe and forward your work with more details.

Best wishes for continued success,

Tamarack
