THE ROLE OF A COOPERATIVE

A savings and credit cooperative will contribute, alongside other financial institutions, to mobilizing, in its turn, the internal savings that each country has an enormous need for. But above all, it appears at this time to be the best structure possible for ensuring that savings efforts in rural areas succeed and get promoted.

Beyond that function, with its basic principles and mode of functioning, the credit cooperative is situated among the most efficient means for mobilizing the masses around national development objectives. In making economic action its priority, the credit cooperative serves as a \"school\" in three ways:

A School for Savings
First of all, it will cultivate in its members a taste for intelligent and useful saving, and familiarize them with the practical support available.

A School for Economic Understanding
Because it involves members closely in its own administration, it exposes them to the problems of a company at the same time that it teaches them methods for efficient and healthy management.

A School of Solidarity, Service and Civic-mindedness
The principles of solidarity lie at the base of all cooperatives. This is why, at the cooperative, credit teaches members to make their money available to all while still protecting each member's interests. They are also taught to seek profit not egotistically for themselves, but for the benefit of all.

Through the functioning of their cooperative, members gradually discover the problems which, on a bigger scale, face the the entire country, and learn to resolve them to the extent that they are able, without expecting to rely on a welfare state for everything.
This last role endows this credit cooperative with its originality, distinguishing it from other extant financial institutions.
