Bringing about change through Web 2.0

Web 2.0 has unending possibilities for people what I would like to call a “ Change Person” who’s had the zeal to work for the social norms and prejudices existent in the society. For someone who’s always been hesitant to speak their mind about something they believe should change because of the many dominant voices who’ll say it’s perfectly right. Web 2.0 is the answer to people who have no idea about how to share their ideas and concerns with its foundations based on social networking, interaction with the global community, citizen journalism. Also it facilitates the exchange of ideas amongst believers of women empowerement which can help in understanding women issues from a global perspective.
The thing that excites me so much about Web 2.0 is the myriads of ways for expressing opinions. The social consiousness I could bring about a taboo in a manner of minutes through Web 2.0 is not possible through any other channels of communications and the best part of it is the fact that it helps me bring such critical issues to the attention of the entire world. For instance, if I had to talk about domestic violence which is a prevalent yet unreported issue in Nepal, I can express it many ways through pictures, videos and even launch a twitter debate to get people talking about a subject that is consiously ignored and hidden by victims themselves in fear of being ridiculed by the society.
There can be no better example of utilizing Web2.0 for women empowerment issues than World Pulse. If it had not been for World Pulse I would not have been able to voice my opinions about the wrongs done to women in my society and bring their silent voices to people who believe in women empowerment. It is indeed the most decisive tool of making one’s voice heard for people who dare to talk about issues that are considered taboo in their society and even going a step further of sharing it with the whole world.
