Stories of transformation - on every level - inspire me!
I engage and transmit academic and experiential learning through transformational Media+Art that inspires change. Passionate about sharing equity education with diverse audiences, I have served as a world music director, audio documentary producer, on-air host, and equity justice facilitator, community educator, and currently co-produce Color Commentary on KSER public radio. I have deep interests related to healing and transforming historical trauma and harms through genealogy activism and the arts. Another way put, I love reconciliation through storytelling.
I enjoy the heartfelt connection of linking descendants of families who share histories of enslavement (on all sides) and believe that this work has transformative qualities and effects, and that each of our families’ legacies are intertwined publicly and privately by notions of "race" and its personal, structural, and institutional ramifications. I am firmly committed and connected to efforts that focus on thinking critically about "race"-ism and power, and how we relate to each other on a human and heart level. Through facilitation of various media arts and contemplative practice(s), I am devoted to drawing connections between academic disciplines and practical experiential wisdom of humanity.
While I've been in various leadership positions, I give infinite gratitude to those leaders who have helped shape my life in countless ways. Above all, I am grateful to the Ancestors for being able to serve communities worldwide. For additional information, please contact me at barbie AT uw.edu. Thank you for visiting.
My Vision for the Future
My vision for an awakened future: To wakefully connect with others in the spirit of reconciliation by courageously engaging in difficult conversations about effects of the past and how they continue to show up in present-day relationships, and this can transform how we live in the future.
