Drugs and Alcohol abuse

Limited opportunities and the unavailability of recreational facilities is driving young people to turn to drugs and substance abuse.
In Kingsdale, about 800 metres from where I stay there is a very popular club (747) that is becoming a focal place for young people.
747 has a play centre for children just outside the bar and this makes it hard for the Police to impose restriction on the purchasing and consumption of alcohol by young people.
Children as young as 10 years are buying alcohol illegally at this club and we as adults are concerned about this. The abuse of alcohol by young people is also resulting in some of them engaging in prostitution.
If kids are allowed to consume alcohol, this may lead to numerous other challenges like teenage pregnancies and the spread of HIV.
So to all parents – what are we teaching the kids by taking them to the bar? Some of us parents are to blame for the young people we see smoking mbanje (Marijuana) sitting on bridges or absconding from school.
