20 GIRLS OFF THE STREET FOR GOOD IN NIGERIA

Thousands of girls troupe out of public secondary schools in Nigeria every year to the streets. This is as a result of the fact that they are not able to further their education and there are no jobs for them. After a year of their graduation from secondary schools at tender age of 15 to 18 years, many of them would have become single mothers with no fathers to claim their children. Many would have become victims of human trafficking, HIV/AIDS and Child Brides. As a result of this, Gender equality is becoming more and more difficult in Nigeria and Violence against Women on the increase at a very alarming rate. As this is becoming a serious burden, Women Inspiration Development Center established Vocational and Violence Free Girls Club (VVIFREG) in 10 public secondary schools in Nigeria last year. The Senior Secondary 2 students that had a year to their graduation was targeted to be members of this club. Immediately they came out of secondary school this year, 20 of these girls was recruited for Empowerment Workshop and Vocational Training at the Center. This was possible as a result of the 540 Euros we were able to raise at www.betterplace.org
