International Women's Day (IWD) is renowned all over the world for the celebration of the social, political and economic achievements of women with a reflection on the challenges hindering the full enjoyment of their rights and the attainment of greater gender equality. Every year, IWD is celebrated on the 8th of March where thousands of events are organized by Charities, Governments, Media and Private organizations to mark the day. This year's theme is "MAKE IT HAPPEN", which will inspire active movement to endorse women's achievements and galvanize action to promote women's rights and the attainment of gender equality. Our special focus will be on "A conversation on the holistic impact of insurgency on women and what can be done to empower them'' A Partnership between Oxfam in Nigeria and Speakers' Corner Trust Nigeria will hold an event to discuss how the women in Nigeria, have fared under the drop in the nation's economy and the current spate of insecurity. These developments have directly affected women as the Government's plan on ban of importation of certain food items which was to encourage local production/consumption will adversely affect the local farmers as the structures that are necessary for this local food production/consumption have not been put in place. Furthermore, the eruptions of violence have left thousands of women and their families living as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). This event will highlight the efforts of women in the economic, social and political sectors and provide practical steps to access funding opportunities in the country. Discussants will be pulled from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Save the Children, UN Women, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), FIDA, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Federal Ministry of Youth Development, FCT Secondary Education Board, National Human Rights Commission, and the International Rescue Committee. Participants will also hear from people affected from the crisis with discussions on the way forward and how to make the changes happen. At the end of the day, emerging issues arising from the event will be developed into a Communique which will be shared with relevant stakeholders including Government bodies, Political parties and relevant organizations to form part of the women's demands from the Government. The event details are as follows - Date: Tuesday 10 March 2015 Time: 9am - 2pm Venue: Barcelona Hotels, Blantyre Street, (Behind AMIGOS) Wuse 2, Abuja. Nigeria.
