I was born in New York, in the United States in December 1963, just after President John F Kennedy was assassinated. I am the eldest of four children. I have two children of my own. My older son is 18 and just graduated from high school. My younger son is 14 and likes science.
My grandmother made it possible for me to go to Boston University. I studied international relations and graduated in 1983. Then she helped me go to law school in Miami, Florida. After I graduated in 1986, I began a career in public service. I taught legal writing at the law school for several years. Then for 15 years, I worked as a court-appointed lawyer helping people who had been charged with major crimes and reviewing convictions for human rights violations.
In 2006 I moved from Portland, Oregon to The Netherlands to prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity. I also teach environmental law and human rights courses at The Hague University.
I have been married for 28 years. I enjoy cooking and can make a delicious meal from just about anything I can find in my kitchen. I love to quilt and knit. I also love sporting activities. In 2010, I ran my first marathon in Rotterdam. I completed a Half Ironman Triathlon in 2011. And I climbed the Grand Teton in 2012. This summer I will lead a group in the Arctic Circle when we trek the Kungsleden in Sweden, hiking 110 km in five days.
If you asked me what I really want to do, I would tell you that I want to help save the planet and help women and girls to find their voices. I believe that we can together accomplish more than any one of us alone. I believe that within each one of us lies the answers to our life purpose and the deep questions asked of us. We are blessed to walk a solitary road together.
