Another's thoughts on GMOs?

I am hoping to get another's thoughts on GMOs, specifically those who have witnessed first-hand the difficulties of agriculture in extreme climate regions.

Just through living life, using our available resources for information and adopting my beliefs, I have strongly believed and agreed with the lifestyle -and "diet"- that compliments ones' values in taking care of our body and trying to eat in a way which is sustainable to Earth.

My Grandy had passed away last year and I had grabbed a few books that I could tell she had read or had been reading. One of them was "Diet for a Small Planet" by Frances Moore Lappé. Not having read through the whole book, I could tell that she was supporting the same idea of not just eating well for ourselves but for the planet and its people (if you have a chance, check out this book). More so, I have been able to read supporting statistics/facts for this lifestyle/diet.

In my belief in a minimalist, organic, plant-based diet, I am still curious what others have to say about GMOs that are supposed to be drought-resistant, etc. So far, much of this "preaching" to provide for regions that are at risk of such continuous natural disasters has only been preaching. In addition to the patenting of seeds and creating competition -resulting in no competition- on top of our subsidies that already don't help, are just furthering the problem for the problem of these regions.

So, to get to my initial reason for posting this, I do not agree with genetic-modification and prefer discovering other sustainable, natural measures for solving the problem. Though I have yet to hear from someone who lives within these regions and has witnessed the loss in agriculture and would like to hear your view on this?

Do we actually have to go so far as creating these modified seeds? I hope not.
