Trabajo doméstico en México

Debido a la diversidad de actividades que encajan dentro la definición de trabajo doméstico y por estar como una actividad principal o secundaria dentro de las actividades remuneradas de una persona; no existe en el mundo datos exactos, salvo estimaciones que se construyen a partir del cruce de información.

Las estimaciones de la OIT señalan que en el mundo hay al menos 52 millones de hombres y mujeres dedicadas a trabajo doméstico, de los cuales cerca de 20 millones están en Ámerica Latina y el Caribe.

En México, las estimaciones del INEGI señalan que existe más de un millón 250 mil trabajadores domésticos ocupados, es decir, que al momento de ser entrevustados se encontraban trabajando. Por lo tanto ese número no considera las personas desempleadas ni aquellas que trabajan prestando otro tipo de servicios como vigilancia, choferes, cuidadores y aquellos que laboran en empresas de outsourcing. Considerando lo anterior aproximadamente en México hay alrededor de 2.2 millones de personas que se dedican al trabajo doméstico (INEGI).

En México, el trabajo doméstico se encuentra regulado en la LFT (capítulo XIII), sin embargo, al ser un trabajo "invisible" no se ha logrado vigilar que sus condiciones de trabajo sean las adecuadas y que se les otorguen los beneficios que la Ley establece. Por otro lado, existen convenios internacionales que protegen a estos trabajadores, como el Convenio número 189 de la OIT (2011) que a la fecha ha sido ratificado por 7 paises entre los cuales no se encuentra México.

Domestic Work in Mexico

Due to the diversity of activities that fall within the definition of domestic work and for it being classified as a principal or secondary activity within the paid activities of a person; no exact data exists in the world, except estimates that are built from the matching of information.

OIT forecasts point out that in the world there are at least 52 millions of men and women dedicated to domestic jobs, of which close to 20 million are in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In México, INEGI forecasts point out that more than a million 250 thousand domestic employees are busy, it is to say, that at the moment of the interview they were employed. Therefore, that number does not consider either unemployed people or those that work offering other type of services such as security, drivers, caretakers and those that work in outsourcing companies. Considering the above approximately in México there are around 2.2 million people that work in domestic jobs (INEGI).

In México, domestic work is regulated in the LFT (chapter XIII), nevertheless, since it is an "invisible" job the working conditions have not been reviewed as being the adequate ones and that the benefits that the law establishes are offered. On the other hand, international agreements exist that protect these employees, like the Agreement number 189 of the OIT (2011) that to this date has been ratified by 7 countries in which Mexico is one of them.
