My Hero

Posted February 24, 2011 from Kenya

There are many people in the world i live in who are my heroes, but after much thought, my mother is the greatest of all of them. I was born and raised in the rural areas of one of the dryiest part of our country Kenya- the Makueni county. i grew up watching my mother, eke out a living as a primary school teacher- the lowest paid civil servants in our country. We were 6 children and my father being unemployed, without any formal profession, meant that mother was the sole bread winner of the family. she has managed to put the six of us through secondary education and college. What amazes me is the fact that back in the 90's so many women were carrying the same burden and no one recognized them.I am now a grown up in University doing my master's degree in literature, I know deep in my heart my mother would rather see me work so as to help her educate my young siblings, but she allowed me to go back to university knowing the full implication of that, she never wispered any objections and to me that was a great sacrifice on her part. Every time i speak with Her my heart acknowledges the fact that without her and women at large, the world would not be what it is!!!
