Reckless driving poses danger to our community

In my community, there is a wide road that passes through to the airport. This is one of the highly maintained roads in Bulawayo metropolitan province. The road is wide and well surfaced. There are no potholes on this road compared to other devastated roads in the country.
Much as the road is maintained, the number of accidents along this road is surprising. A month does not pass without witnessing two to three accidents along this road.
One day I witnessed an accident that took place in broad daylight. This accident made me realize that there is need to intensify road patrols by the police and to do awareness raising activities targeting drivers.
On this day I was walking from Kingsdale shops to Number One Shops. Just as I was about to pass by the Methodist church, I saw a Japanese made vehicle almost flying along the road from the airport direction. When the driver reached the curve near the Methodist church, he failed to negotiate the curve. The car went out of control and crushed onto a tree. The driver was seriously injured and was taken to hospital.
I also think that that what is contributing to the increase in accidents is the corruption within the vehicle licensing department. A lot of people are getting a driver’s license without going through the testing process.
