Introducing myself and my journal: Growth of a Garden

About Me:
I teach Sociology at a community college. I have particular interests in women's issues, immigration issues, assimilation and social change. I enjoy volunteering. I volunteer with two agencies right now, one that works with newly arrived refugees, another that provides services to torture survivors. I enjoy helping new immigrants learn English too. I grew up in a conservative, fundamentalist, rural community and feel that those values really handicapped my potential as a woman in this society. I love meeting people from various cultures! If I could have 1 superpower, I wish I could speak every language in the world so language would be no barrier. I also enjoy being creative and cooking dishes from various countries.

My Passions:
women's issues and growth, plight of immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers

My Challenges:
using my voice. I was taught early on that I shouldn't even want to use my voice!

My Vision for the Future:
regaining hope when the world feels too difficult

My Areas of Expertise:
social movements/change, women's issues, immigration issues, domestic violence, overcoming
