passing on of wangari Maathai

As you might be aware, Wangari Maathai, the 2004 Noble peace Laureate from Kenya passed away on Monday. She was an environmentalist and fought for the rights of women and Kenyans in general. She believed that we can do something to change things however small. Her strength was rare and her husband divorced her for being a very strong woman who could not be controlled. Her 'rebellion' against oppression was against the grain as when her former husband went to court to force her to drop his name, she refused and instead added another letter to her name( Maathai instead of Mathai). She refused to have our main recreation park grabbed by the government and planted trees in Karura forest when it was being grabbed and vowed to shed blood for it. She stood with mothers of political prisoners and suffered immensely for all her struggles.
As we mourn her death and celebrate life, it has been a time of reflection for women in Kenya and how we can go against the grain and make a difference no matter how small. Let us do something for humanity. Wangari defended the environment and argued it was for the sake of our grandchildren. As women, we can influence and affect future generations in our own small ways
