Web 2.0: New Voice for Girls and Women

One of the most exciting things about web 2.0 is the fact that no one is isolated anymore from the rest of the world because now what happens in the furthermost parts of the world can be read about and even viewed right there in the comfort of your location. The fact that I am also given the opportunity to say something and be part of these events that takes place in any part of the world is so awesome.

The tools are great. There was the case of the young woman beaten by some security personnel for a Nigerian Naval officer just for not being able to clear the road for him to pass. Someone had the initiative to record the event, it was circulated on different new media platforms and gave women groups the opportunity to mobilize and pressure the Naval Force for some form of compensation and it was used as evidence in a court. If not for new media the issue would have never been heard. Since then uniform officers have been careful harassing girls and women because the perpetrators do not know if they are being recorded.

I am excited about web 2.0 because of the amazing tools and various platforms it provides for me to share my stories and reach so many people at the same time. It provides such a platform that true stories can be told in a not so serious way. I do not need to be a trained or experienced journalist to speak up and tell my story where people can listen, learn, comfort, strengthen as well as encourage where necessary. Web 2.0 provides an opportunity for beautiful friendships to be formed and a source of inspiration as well as solidarity in sisterhood.

Web 2.0 brings people, girls and women especially, of various continents together to encourage and inspire each other. It brings together various voices from different parts of the world to share their stories and gain support, and suggestions on how the movement can be carried forward. One thing is very sure-web 2.0 has given the movement a platform Voice to speak out about issues that ordinarily would be shut down or not given space in the contemporary media platforms.
The new tools have empowered me to speak out without fear knowing that there are sisters on these platforms to encourage and inspire; knowing that there are sisters out there who share the same thoughts and are willing to join their voice to yours to make your voice heard stronger and louder.

This tool has empowered me to write and post various articles on women issues especially Sexuality and Reproductive Health and Rights. It connected me to this wonderful website Worldpulse where I have met fantastic young Nigerian women whom together we run a blog on Nigerian Women’s participation on politics and decision making in Nigeria.
These platforms have been very rewarding in engaging with other young people on issues that are relevant in community development.
