Polygamy subjects women to unhappy marriages

In our culture, a man can have two wives. Long ago it was customary that when a man wanted to take a second wife, he would consult his first wife.
Today, a lot of men are abusing this system. Some men are now taking a second wife without the knowledge of the first wife.
Recently, a married man from our community took a second wife. He rented a place for the second wife and started to support her without the knowledge of the first wife.
The second wife did not know about the first wife so she suspected that her husband had a girlfriend. She got the phone number of the first wife and started to verbally abuse her over the phone.
When she realised that the verbal attacks were worsening, the first wife went to report the matter to the police. All the wives and the husband were called to the police station to settle the issue.
When they got home from the station, the husband was so angry with the first wife that he threatened to beat her. He took all the household property and burned them. He also threatened to kill their son.
This forced the first wife to report to the police again and the husband was arrested. When the case was before the courts, the wife decided to withdraw the case because the husband was the breadwinner. The marriage is however in shambles as everyone is unhappy.
