Introducing myself and my journal: Empowering folk artists to succeed in the global marketplace

About Me:
The mission of the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is to foster economic and cultural sustainability for folk artists and folk art worldwide and create intercultural exchange opportunities that unite the peoples of the world. In five years, the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market has established itself as the largest international folk art market in the world. It has received both national and international recognition for its impact upon the economic independence of folk artists around the globe.

Each year, the Market takes place for one weekend in July and provides a relaxed colorful atmosphere of an international festival, with some of the world’s finest folk art, multicultural entertainment, ethnic foods, and educational activities for children and families. During the Market, visitors observe artists’ demonstrations at the booths and have ample opportunity for interaction and cultural exchange, deepening their appreciation of the cultures of our world. The Market attracted 20,400 people (20% increase over 2007).

For the Market taking place on July 11 & 12, 2009, there will be 134 of the world’s finest folk artists from 46 countries, who have been selected by a panel of folk art experts based on a set of criteria including quality, marketability, and authenticity of their work. One-third, or 38 booths, represent artists’ cooperatives and associations with close to 16,000 members impacting the lives of 160,000 family and community members. A vast majority of these groups consist of women who are working towards economic independence and empowerment for their members.

As a leading international folk art organization, we envision a world that celebrates and values evolving traditional art and cultures, where a dynamic global folk art market ensures a dignified, sustainable living for folk artists, who are essential to preserving cultural diversity.
