GIVING EAR TO EVERYONE
Have realised that I have ben underestimating and ignorant of the web 2.0 power .Can’t believe that I have been seating around a powerful tool and not even realise it. Personnaly I have been very conservative towards web 2.0, though before I didn’t know anything much about web 2.0.I have been anti –social media for a long time, because I have seen a lot of bad stuff coming from them.
After reading the material which was given, I started seeing and appreciating the opportunity and power of web 2.0. I now understand why some people are always on the net, updating their pages and uploading new information,even those which I thought were not that important.
One thing that excites me the most about web 2.0 is the free platform to talk to the world. I don’t need to be a nominated for the best award to give my speech, I don’t need a political rally to heared or a well known surname to be listened to.I just need to have women’s well being at heart and a passion for humanity .The possibilities which are before me are limitless . It is very promising to hear of the stories of the fellow comrades who have made it through the use of this platform. The other thing that amazed me is the fact that I can have an influence on what is in the news, how it is reported and I can influece the discussions around the world .Life can never be better than this.
The solutions which have been brought up and will be brought by web 2.0 are amazing.According to http://www.kabissa.org/about/news/womens-technology-empowerment-centre-wtec, Oreoluwa Somolu of Nigeria started off with a blog which she initialy set up to keep in touch with friends and collegues but right now through it she established a programme (Women's Technology Empowerment Centre) which encourages Nigerian girls and women to learn about ICT as a way of empowering them socially and economically. I believe that through this programme a young woman was saved from GBV, HIV/AIDS, poverty, early marriage and other ills which have hard heaten women especially in Africa.
It is clear that web 2.0 sets a level ground for both men and women.It says “let the best voice be heard” regardless of one’s biological make-up . Women have an audience, which used to be out of bounce due to culture/ religion. This platform provides the global women’s empowerment movement to speak with one voice, to share experiences, to learn from each other and above all to appreciate one another.Even to influence the culture and policies.
As a Programmes Manager for an organisation which deals with issues of gender based violence this presents me with an opportunity to introduce innovative ways to engage women who are adversely affected by GBV. Just an understanding of how this tools work has already empowered me. Iam nolonger intimidated by web 2.0 and now I can easily take part in the discussions around the world.
