No evidence to suggest sexual assault, say police

She was living in an orphanage for girls near Vizhinjam

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police on Wednesday said so far they had come across no evidence to suggest that the 13-year-old girl who was admitted with serious injuries to Medical College Hospital on Monday evening was sexually assaulted.

She was living in an orphanage for girls run by a religious order near Vizhinjam.

City Police Commissioner M.R. Ajith Kumar said forensic doctors, who examined the girl, told the police that she was not assaulted sexually. The girl was not in a condition to speak to the police.

Hospital sources said the girl had sustained fractures on both her arms and a severe blow to her stomach. There was a minor fracture on her skull and bruises on her legs. She had also lost several of her teeth.

They said the girl’s condition was stabilising slowly. Her relatives told the police that she had accidentally fallen while climbing down the stairs of the building.

K.K. Subair, District Probation Officer, Juvenile Justice, said that Kerala State Child Welfare Committee members Dhanya Kumari and M. Sasidharan visited the girl at the hospital.

“They told me that the child could barely speak and she had difficulty in recollecting what happened to her. For instance, she does not even remember that her parents visited her at the hospital,” he said.

Mercy Alexander of the Sakhi Resource Centre for Women said members of her organisation had already visited the institution, spoken to the representatives of its management and also the girl’s parents.

There were nearly 400 girls hailing from poor families living in the three storey building. The incident occurred on the second floor at around 3.30 p.m. when the rest of the students had gone for prayer to a place of worship on the same compound. It was another student who saw the girl lying collapsed on the landing of the staircase. She raised an alarm and the management rushed the girl to the hospital.She said the girl’s parents had no complaint against the institution’s management. The girl’s younger sister was studying there.

Mr. Ajith Kumar said the police had registered a case and the investigation would reveal how the girl was injured. Assistant Commissioner, Fort, B. Krishnakumar is heading the inquiry.
