Daughters of America Speak out for Wage Equality

To the Clinton Global Initiative: April 22, 2015, When I was 16 in 1972 women made 74 cents on the dollar that men made doing the same job. In the most powerful country in the world, women still don't make a fair wage. In a country where so much attention is given to the disparity of people of color and minorities, women, who are the majority continue to be dissed. Wage inequality affects the majority of working women.

Where is the outrage?

When will the world start treating women with fairness and equality? How many years do women have to be treated as second class citizens?

How does this look to girls growing up, to have the vision that life isn't fair and that men get treated better? Believe me, it's something I have been working for as a feminist for over 40 years. Some younger women in this country see no need for feminism any longer, really? Feminism isn't just another \"F\" word, it's alive and well, and we haven't \"come a long way” and don't call me baby.

Wage inequality is wrong and you know it. Why can't our government pass laws that entitle the female sex to equality? Because women in Congress are only 20 percent.

Where is the outrage? Why aren't women voting their own minds? Why do some women keep protecting the men who stick it to women every day?

So today I saw a story today about a discount store that was charging men more for their goods and giving women more of a deal. Just trying to make up for women making 76 cents on the dollar Read the story:

In the days I am writing this I see that someone else quotes that it’s 77 cents on the dollar. Whatever! How long are we willing to wait? So what company is going to be next? What about Wal-Mart, you remember them, they were sued by a class-action suit of dozens of women employees who claimed Wal-Mart was not promoting women. And the judge in the case claimed \"the women didn't have enough in common\" and they lost the case? Really? Where's the outrage. Why can't Wal-Martbe the next company to step up and have men pay the full amount and women to pay 76 cents on the dollar when going through the check out line?

Maybe it will take Hillary Clinton to make all that change. And why so much resistance to her running for President already? Are men afraid that women, if they get in power, will mistreat men as they did us? Look at all the abuse; rape and downright meanness and disrespect toward women and girls in this country. One in three college women has been raped. The epidemic of military sexual assault is at an all-time high.

Why is there so much dissension? Don't women deserve to be treated as well as men? The days of the old white men running this country are slowing dying out like extinct dinosaurs. Make way for the change, empower girls and women. It can only enhance goodness in society when women earn a fair wage. Ask any married man if it would help the family if his wife got a raise.

Look around your next holiday table and ask yourself a question, wouldn't it be a better world if your sister, daughter, niece, and grandmother made a fair living wage. What's all the stink about? Allow a woman to be President, come on; open your minds, and empowering women and girls. Who’s it going to hurt? Men have had their chance at running this country. Do you think women could do any worse?

Women need to start demanding a place at the table. Stop compromising yourself and start withholding things that men want. Until we get equality men will feel it, you know what I'm talking about?

Stop supporting people and companies that don't treat women equally.

Stand up to sexism at it's worst. Be heard.

What are American Men so Afraid of?

There is a war on women and it’s raging on out of control.

The radical, extreme right-wing of the Republican Party is again exhibiting classic misogynist and racist behavior. Why are they so upset about the promotion of women and people of color rising up and claiming their rightful place in our society? The way they tried to prevent the nomination and installation of Sonya Sotomayer to the Supreme Court, which only equals out the white, male-dominated Supreme Court?

It’s been a long time coming that the old, white male steps down from his lofty perch, a position he has had since the beginning of our dear nation? Women have waited too long to be treated fairly. Look how long it took to give women and people of color to be able to vote and to have equal representation in our government. Women are the majority, 54 percent of the population, and within less than 10 years the Latino population will be the majority. What are American Men so afraid of?

Do men feel guilt and fear that the new majority will in turn treat them badly? Well, get over it! A new America was born when the majority of American’s voted in Barrack Obama. If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen. Women have come a long way since the sixties and seventies when woman's liberation was finally demanded. It hasn’t been that long since women had the right to vote. There are some men who feel that they wished it wasn't so. But feminism is not dead it is still very much alive.

Women still make only 77 cents on the dollar that men make. Thirty-five years ago it was 72 cents on the dollar. Doesn't that sound outrageous to you?

Many of the tea party are angry, white, 45-year-old men who are still enraged that a black man has become president. And these same people were petrified that a woman, (Hillary Clinton) nearly became President. How outrageous! Can you imagine how they would be treating Hillary if she had won? That is why the Democratic party when they knew she would win the election made an about-face and deserted her for a black man thinking that people would rather have a black man win as opposed to a white woman. Oh to think of it! Outrageous! Unheard of! Hillary was robbed.

The radical, extreme right wingman is a thing of the past, a dinosaur that will have to be taken down while they are kicking and screaming because they have had the advantage and control for so long. Who cares?

The Newt Gingrich's, Glenn Beck's and Rush Limbaugh's of the world are showing the rage and frustration of a party that has not opened up to include everyone. The Republican Party must denounce those types of haters and start building its new base or they will be like the old Whip party decades ago that was destroyed completely.

Rush Limbaugh who is now the voice of the Republican Party hoping our President will fail. It's a disgrace and it’s downright unpatriotic! Glenn Beck churns out his own brand of fear-mongering and is downright mean and disrespectful to our President. What is he so afraid of?

Why are so many people feeling threatened that our country is now inclusive of all people? Isn't it what our forefathers and foremothers wanted for our country?

Stop the hating of anyone who isn’t you. The world has enough room for all of us.

There has been a one hundred twenty percent increase in crimes against women

and children. It shows a link to the animosity toward women. Why? What are some American men so afraid of? Women are your sisters, nieces, wives, and grandmothers and we deserve to live in a world where we are honored. What have we done to have you hate us so? Laws to weaken Roe vs. Wade, inequalities in insurance coverage, the Republican” Party of No” keeps our government from moving ahead on Universal Health care for everyone! How can they be against that? Bitterness and hate.

These outdated men have to evolve and have empathy for women and other minorities. There are men right now that are evolved and they should reach out to other men and show them the way. Men should speak up to injustice no matter how uncomfortable it may when confronting other less evolved men. Next time you are at family gathering listen to how women are treated, ask to help with the dishes next holiday and see the reaction. Those liberated men may be few but their ranks are growing and I salute them as they are out there and also need a voice.

We as Americans all deserve equal representation and that includes gays and lesbians? That’s right; they are just as worthy as people that marry opposite-sex partners. How would you feel if the law was changed that opposite-sex partners could no longer marry and could only have civil unions? It’s all a matter of perspective; can’t you walk a mile in their shoes? In fact, I was floored to hear our EX-VICE President Cheney make the statement that his daughter deserved equal rights. I would speculate that he would never have said that unless he had a strong woman in his family that forced, actually persuaded him to stand up for her. If you don't want to marry someone of the same sex you have the choice not to. But why deny people to enter into relationships and families. It's a changing world we have to learn to be compassionate and open to other ways of thinking and living.

Finally, we have a President that we can be proud of. He represents the majority of people in this country. Our voices and our vote have made it so. And what has President Obama done but to try to get health care for 30 million people? And he is bringing us out of a recession that hadn't happened since the depression. And yet people still use hate speech and hold signs saying our president is a Nazi or that he wasn't born in the United States. It’s disrespectful to our President. Where is the outrage?

We are a new generation of people who include everyone. We are and always have been a melting pot that makes us American’s. Can’t we learn to allow more people into the circle? The voice of all of us makes the grand song that we call America.

My story: Why getting MS was one of the best things that happened to me.

I worked in service to people with disabilities for thirty-five years and then ironically became disabled myself when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I used my knowledge of the disability field to help navigate myself through health systems, social security, and durable medical equipment to get the equipment I needed at home. All the decades I worked in the field gave me a great advantage over people who find themselves suddenly disabled

And here comes the good part. One day I started cleaning out one of my closets and found the box with all my old journals from the early eighties. As I read one of them I thought to myself “this could make a good story, and it’s funny too\". So I wrote and published three fictionalized memoirs available in E-book called “From the Waters of Coyote Springs”, “Felix and Eve” and “The Arrangement”. by Diane DeVillers. aka girlpower Now all three books are available in one paperback book called “The Eve Chronicles”.They start when I first moved to Oregon and lived in the Wallowa Mts in eastern Oregon doing timber inventory surveys.

I keep active by posting on blogs and writing letters to my Congress and my representative in Oregon about keeping funding for people with disabilities and other baby boomer values. We have seen such great change in acknowledging climate change and to fund alternative energies and organic foods. Equal rights have always been the boomer's top ideals, for a world where everyone has the chance to be who they want to be. To not be held back by the dark history of racism, sexism, and classism.

I was a part of feminism all those years ago and continue to push for the empowerment of girls and women. It will make a kinder, gentler society and it will spread all over the world. You just watch America, our future is forming in the minds of a new generation. Let the world listen to their women and move forward into a fairer, intuitive consciousness where everyone is welcome around the table.
