Introducing myself and my journal: It's Not You, It's Me

About Me:
SO, I just finished Half the Sky and one of the first four steps it told me I should take is to sign up for emails from this site and, by George, I've done it. I'm not very experienced in the world of charity. Half the Sky was recommended by a friend and it was the first book like it I've ever read. But I don't intend for it to be the last. The book has done its job in sparking an interest in me in what's going on outside of my small little southern town, and what seems to be going on is something I never imagined. Sure I knew there were places where women were largely put down, without the opportunities so many of us receive in the US, but in this book I've read about hardships dealt with by girls younger than me, a privileged 15-year-old, and how they survived to tell the story when I'm sure I would've just given up. 10-year-olds shouldn't have to be plotting their escape from a brothel before they have their first period while I'm complaining about my geometry homework. So yes, I'm doing this in hope of making a difference in some girls' lives, but also to make a difference in my own life and to teach myself that there are so many more important and powerful things going on in the world than my sore legs after a hard run.

My Vision for the Future:
My generation of teenagers is openly superficial. I wouldn't mind more kids my age taking their eyes away from their iPhones and gossip magazines to notice what is going on in the world. But I'm just as guilty of that as any. I'd like to change that.

My Areas of Expertise:
My areas of expertise mostly consist of how to navigate a computer and update my Facebook status, but I'm a decent writer and a hard worker.
