The first 17 years of my life were enjoyed in Afghanistan. When the Russian conflict was imminent, in 1978, we immigrated to the USA. When my father died in 1995, I decided to return to Afghanistan, something my father had dreamed of doing.
However, in 1999, I could only get as far as Pakistan where I decided to visit the Afghan refugee camps. I was shocked to see the conditions under which the people had to live and was inspired to start schools for the refugees. By December of 2001, I was finally able to return home to Afghanistan. Before 2001, I had entered Afghanistan temporarily and was able to establish clandestine schools for women. Although the Taliban tried multiple times to stop the women from attending these schools, to the credit of the women, they persisted, so that by 2003, I was able to formally establish Aid For Afghanistan for Education, a nonprofit registered in Afghanistan. We now have over 3000 students in 13 different schools and, most recently, a school for boys. Close to 700 women have graduated, many of whom continued on to University.
Recognizing that peace was dependent on both education and jobs, in 2004, I established Boumi, a home décor business focused on building jobs, saving the beautiful cultural art of embroidery and building an international market for the products. We currently produce a line called "Birds of Peace" in addition to multiple home decor items. Farsi script is on each bird as chosen by the woman who hand embroidered it. These Farsi words mean various things including "Peace," "Hope," and other such phrases.
As of 2013, US Aid has stopped for these schools. We need bridge funding for 3 to 6 months until internal funding is available. Please email email@example.com to organize assistance. Of course, all donations will be U.S. tax-deductible. Individuals are also able to donate through our U.S. sister site, aidafghanistan.org.
