Introducing myself and my journal: Violet Voices

About Me:
I work as a consultant with a highly reputed consulting firm in the Indian city of Bangalore. I work in the Women and Child Development space, though I also do work in education and healthcare. This is because I am fortunate to work in one of the few consulting firms in India with an active practice in the social sector.

Some of the more interesting work I have done has involved conducting an analysis of the situation of women in the Indian state of Karnataka on various socio-economic parameters, identifying the key issues based on this analysis, and holding stakeholder workshops to come out with a number of strategies that the government needs to undertake to address these issues. Since this project was commissioned by the government, a number of these strategies have now been converted into policies that are to be implemented across the state.

I am currently working on a project to improve the services provided by the Women and Child Welfare Department in the Indian state of Karnataka to women and children in the state. I am also on a project which surveys the Mid-day Meal Scheme (a programme which provides free nutrituous meals to all children studying in government schools) in the state.

I love to read, and am an incorrigible book worm. I end up being drawn towards Asian fiction, or literature written by women from across the world. But I am now in the process of discovering non Asian, non-male writers, and only now do I realise what I have missed up ignoring Terry Prachett, John Updike and Philip Roth all these years!

I also love cinema. India has a thriving film industry and I watch a number of Hindi and Telugu films every year, both mainstream cinema (which is largely commercial in India) and the more offbeat variety. I also try to catch as many foreign language films as I possibly can, with a partiality to French cinema. I am also a big fan of Japanese anime (not manga as much as the Studio Ghibli range).

My greatest passion is to travel. My dream is to travel across the world. I have travelled through most of Europe, and have also visited a number of countries in the Asia-Pacific region. For this year, Russia and Latin America are competing for my attention!

I think of myself as a global citizen. At the same time, being a woman, and being an Indian are an integral part of my identity.
