Bio; Jan PorterI am a published author with minister credentials and over thirty years experience in human services who specializes in empowerment and inspiration. I am the founder of Soul Works Gifting Foundation with three published books, two audios with numerous other projects in various stages of completion, a workshop facilitator and freelance contributor to a handful of magazines. I recall as a young child, being held captivated with Robert Service's magical yarns of the northern wilderness, indigenous cultures, saints, mysticism and shamanism. As a teen I found old battered copies of Voltaire's 'Candide', Margaret Caven's 'I Heard the Owl Call My Name' and anything ancient mystical which my awkward geeky adolescent soul hungered for. Inspired, I first dabbled with typewritten short stories, articles and poetry founding a funky alternative secondary school newspaper 'Cool School News'. After many years of work in Human Services, evening ferocious reading while raising children (all much food for character and story seeds) followed by a long arduous post secondary completion of a Minister Degree and Ordination, I began to polish some of those numerous works that had long been collecting dust in various stages of completion. I consider myself more of a philosophical ponderer of human nature, quantum physics, spirit world, nature and of the cosmos, hence my writing is non-secular. I aim to share thought provoking human conditions, at times touch on that bigger picture of spirituality, mystical, ancient traditions or quantum physics to offer inspiration and empowerment through the ancient art of storytelling; real people, unsung unlikely heroes and a touch of the magical. I have not owned a television for over thirty years; I would rather teach or write with U2, some good blues music, Celtic, acoustic guitar or shamanistic chant playing in the background. Begging my attention still in the works is another self help book, a handful of children’s stories and yet another novel. I am a proud member of; The Writer's Union of Canada, Algonquin Arts Council and the Mohawk College Alumni Association and the Bancroft Spiritual Centre.
