The People´s Conference on Climate Change is On

The Bolivian National Government has everything set for the beginning of The People´s World Conference on Climate Change that will take place from April 20th to 22nd in the municipality of Tiquipaya, state (department) of Cochabamba, with the presence of 18,000 to 20,000 activists, leaders, governors, and environment experts.

The 16 Work Group, outlined yesterday a strategy for the analysis and debate of the themes to be presented during the People´s s World Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth.

The Bolivian Ambassador to the United Nations, Pablo Solon, informed that the Bolivian proposal states “the way to proceed to make the industrialized countries governments change their policies in relation to Climate Change”. In the meantime, the Police commanding officer, colonel Oscar Nina, assured some hours ago that the “Pachamama Operation” has began for the security of the People´s World Conference on Climate Change.

Tens of Delegations

“We have been informed that delegations are beginning to arrive to Cochabamba this morning, and were standing in lines to accredit themselves; until yesterday we had 15,154 people, this morning I was informed we had 18,000 and the number is growing, so we believe we will reach 20,000 attendees to this important conference” said Choquehuanca, the Foreign Affairs Minister.

Choquehuanca stated that delegations represent some 129 nations, including 32 African countries, 33 European countries, 21 from Asia, 18 from Central America, 12 from South America, 10 from Oceania and 3 from North America.

He explained that the organization has trimmed the details for the event, as virtually 17 groups are working for the event, besides, more than 100 tents are prepared for social organizations to expose their products and cultures, apart from the 166 events that will take place in Tiquipaya.

Pachamama Operation

Nina stated that the operation called Pachamama was planned by security forces of the State, meaning that Armed Forces and Police have sent their best teams to guarantee the normal development of the conference which will be the reunion of more than 18,000 people from many nations.

According to the National Government Information Agency, ABI, the presidents who have confirmed their presence to the summit are from Ecuador, Rafael Correa; from Venezuela, Hugo Chavez; from Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, and the Premier of Antigua and Barbuda, Baldwin Spencer.

The idea of this World Conference was born at the end of the Copenhague World Summit on Climate Change, where president Evo Morales felt disappointed by the lack of commitment of industrialized countries to make real advancements to fight climate change. This conference aims to answer the needs of people in a world scale to protect the rights of Mother Earth, which will be defined in this forum.
