Who has the big voice in the house?

Today I was at friend's house celebrating his 40th birthday. It was a beautiful and lovely simple party as most of us were from Zimbabwe but living in the UK at the moment. We were all talking about our childhood, growing up in Zimbabwe, how it seemed our mothers would give us' THE LOOK' especially when you were misbehaving in front of guests. THE LOOK was just enough to tell you to stop any silly behaviour and respect the visitors. Funny enough I do not remember ever seeing my father give me or my brothers THE LOOK. Walking down memory lane with my friends today made realise that being a mother is a very influential role in the growth and development of our children.
It is interesting how life changes with environment or maybe it changes with people's behaviour. Nowadays as a mother if you try to give your child 'THE LOOK' they actually ask you if there is something wrong with your eyes. I never or even now speak back to my mother even if I disagree with what she might be saying. I will have to find a diplomatic way to express my opinion in a respectful manner. Mothers are very good at telling you off for misbehaving, comforting you during hard times and making the loudest lovely noise during a child's graduation and wearing the best outfit.
Talking about childhood today made me feel very lucky to have mother who gave me 'THE LOOK' to excel in life and be somebody and be able to speak to other women like her. 'THE LOOK' when I reflect back it was a way for my mother to remind us( children) who was in charge in the house. Mother was and still is the big voice in the house and the family has continued to grow from her voice.
