Celebrating Spirit of women

On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, International Women’s Wing, Vishwa Gujarati Samaj organized a Unique workshop for the post graduate students of the sociology department at the Gujarat University. The workshop's theme was “Inspiring Change”. The students were divided into several groups and asked to work on three sub-theme 1. Inspiring Women in India, 2. Gender Equality and 3. Changing Status of women in India by drawing charts and explaining their own understanding through the work of art.

To my surprise , it turned out to be a great event. the group was divided into six groups and six posters were created by these students. One of the group leaders were to explain in detail about the work. One girl who stood out the most. She talked about her personal issues as a woman and how she has been able to tackle her situation. She mentioned that being part of a very rigid community, women are not allowed to take higher education and are not allowed to stay single till they finish their post Graduation. She is the only girl in her family pursuing post graduation and she fights in her own way with the community.

Someone asked me today, who inspired you and I want to say this girl who so boldly and vehemently fights with traditional values & society inspired me today. I believe these are some of very unknown women who can bring the change we aspire in the society and can go great lengths at bringing the change.

I always have believed that we may aspire to be great known women to us but I do believe that let us start at the grass root. we can not suddenly start living with most empowered women. Women at grass root needs to survive in the social circles and cultural boundaries they live within and bring about smaller changes around them with not disturbing the ecology of the society around but slowly bring about the change.

Today on the International women's Day I do congratulate all these women who are not the leaders but who bring about the real change in our society especially in the developing countries.
