My Journey

My name is Katia, I am 24 years old, I studied electronics engineering and I live in Mexico City. My father is a psychologist who, for 25 years, worked for an institution thathelps young people who are homeless and at risk, my mother is a stay at home mom and I have a younger brother. Throughout my life, I’ve been aware and reminded by my father of how lucky I am to have a family, a home and to have had access to an education and opportunities to grow. It’s not a secret that in my country, being born a girl puts us at risk of being harassed, raped or even killed; this is what drives me, this is what I want to change, not just for me, I want us all to feel safe, to be empowered instead of beaten up.

For the past month, I’ve been working closely with Luz María de la Mora, who is the founder of Vital Voices in Mexico, helping her come out with ideas to empower Vital Voices Mexico through social media, to engage with more woman in Mexico and help them believe that their dreams can come true.I’ve created videos with business women telling their stories and tips for women who want to start their own business for the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day; also, during the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women I launched a campaign inviting people to share their images with the hashtag #MujeresVitales (vital women) against gender violence and got over 300 pictures of women, men, children and even pets supporting this noble cause

I am convinced that change starts with us, and that we have a responsibility to our world, to make it better for all us.
