I AM THE ONE!

A narrative on how my parents divorced when I was born a hearing Impaired – born cursed isn't an important thing? The story of how we wandered about before settling in Nairobi slums where I worked as a housemaid casual is even less important. Stigmatization and abuse from fellow human beings and how I ran away to Homa-Bay to do farm work and sell fruits and to do odd jobs for survival.

Those are weak stories of wickedness. The real narratives, stories of strength, are the stories of the well-wishers, and the organizations like Kenya Christian School For The Deaf (KCSD) who stretched a helping hand and took me to school and re-restored my dignity and hope are the stories you need to hear because cruelty shouldn't be honoured with a narration. I'm LavendaAwuor and I am a star of hope, a product of both human cruelty and generosity.

There are countless young girls like me out there; those their hopes have been thwarted and think they are not human enough. I have become part of NGO called Kenya Christian School For The Deaf (KCSD) that fosters deaf girls education, vocational skills & Integration in Kenya to reach out deaf girls and their parents to inform and educate them that they too are human and are capable of achieving their goals just like anyone else.

The lesson I learned when I was 22 years old! The greatest human imperfection is ignorance. Ignorance is poisonous. Ignorance breeds all form of injustices. When you look at me and think you are a better breed of a human because of my skin then all your education is nothing but a burden to you.

Now I am settling and I want to build my mother a house and finally give her dignity of hope and sense of belonging. I want to be able to provide education to disadvantaged children. I want to get married. I want to have children and raise my own family. I want the things any other person wants in life. I have come from tilling farms and to have a tag around my neck as an ICT officer here in Kisumu. I hope someone with hearing Impairment reads this and says yes we can! I hope you read this and think we are not so different! We need equal opportunity & not favour because we all deserve it! Let not “leave no child behind” And let no one define your life, it's all about You.
