Updates from my end

Dear World Pulsarians

Last year was absolutely crazy, so much so that I hardly had time to log on to World Pulse. I however kept myself updated through the posts that were sent in my inbox. The correspondents and members continue to amaze me. I feel fortunate to be a part of this vibrant community, the one that inspires me each day.

For the most part of last year, I worked with International IDEA to work on a book entitled "Women Members of the Constituent Assembly: A study on the Contribution of Women in the constitution making in Nepal". This book is a joint effort of International IDEA, Constituent Assembly Secretariat, Women's Caucus of the Constituent Assembly and Nepal law Society. This 900-page book has been published both in English and Nepali language.

The election of 197 women to the Constituent Assembly of Nepal was a historic achievement and raised hopes with regard to ensuring gender equality in the constitution-building process. The elected women members comprise almost 33 per cent of the 601 members and include old-time politicians, women activists, professionals, former combatants and war widows.

This book presents the stories of the women Constituent Assembly members, which reflect their struggles, their hopes and their perseverance in struggling to bring equality to Nepali society. Their stories include journeys from battlefields to politics and from student politics to national politics, transformations from oppressed village girl to prominent politician, and life-long engagements in political movements, social work or professional life.

Working on this book was both exciting and challenging. Documenting the history of women's political movement in Nepal and profiling the lives of 197 great women was surely not an easy feat. At one point, I felt I could do no more. I could not push myself anymore. But of course, those were times when things were not going right. I loved working on this project. There was so much I learnt.
